Students’ voices + candidates’ vision = Westminster’s future

After two days of voting and weeks of campaigning, the results for the new ASW representatives are in:

ASW President: Max Gutierrez

VP of Internal Affairs: Chase White

VP of Government Affairs: Simeon Hammond

VP of Campus Affairs: Hailey Kim

With ASW elections in full swing, candidates are ready to express how they want to change campus engagement.

Students on campus share which candidates have their vote

“I voted for Hailey Kim because she’s an RA,” said Lila Howells, a junior justice studies major.  “You have a lot of responsibilities as an RA, and I felt because she could handle that, she could be competent in the [position] and understand campus bureaucracy well.”

Similar to Howells’ trust in Kim, another student expressed confidence in a different candidate who ran for Vice President of Internal Affairs.

“[Fatima Romero is] on ASW this year and she’s doing a good job of trying to get everything together,” said Harper Elder, a sophomore and LMW major. “I’ve talked to her about her role in ASW so I trust her to do it well again next year.”

Another student shared why she voted for Max Gutierrez, who ran for ASW President.

“He’s my roommate, so maybe I’m a little biased, but I like what he stands for and I hope that he can try to get more people out to athletic events,” said Alivia Preston, a senior and environmental studies major.

Preston also shared why she voted for Max Murphy, who ran for the ASW Vice President of Campus Affairs.

“I had a philosophy class with him a couple semesters ago and I think that he’s not afraid to say what he thinks,” said Preston.

In contrast, some students expressed that they had limited knowledge of candidates.

“I abstained on quite a lot of the options because I just didn’t feel like I knew enough to make a vote,” said Kale Davis, a first-year student and chemistry major.

Most candidates named campus engagement as their priority if elected

One of the candidates said they want to see higher campus engagement and that there is a need for ‘better marketing and advertising’, despite them not studying marketing.

“I think there’s kind of shitty marketing, like maybe you get a poster in a bathroom or an email that no one is going to read, but I think that we should work really hard on having club leaders… in classrooms [for] just a few minutes to talk to people and get them involved,” said Max Murphy, who ran for ASW Vice President of Campus Affairs.

Another candidate shared similar themes of emphasizing marketing and advertising but with a differing strategy from Murphy’s.

“[As] Vice President of Internal Affairs, I am not in charge of the money, but I can approve where money goes, so I’m putting an emphasis on marketing,” said Chase White, a junior music major. “I feel like that will trickle down to clubs that are doing well and events that we want to see more participation in.”

Other candidates have different priorities.

“[I plan to] know what the students need and want,” said Kim.

Kim said she plans to align the students’ needs with on-campus events to allow the student body to thrive.

Violet Czech, a junior neuroscience major and current vice president of government affairs, said she would use her experience in her ASW position to apply it to the president position next year.

Czech said one of her priorities is to get more ASW members specialized mentoring from faculty and staff.

For instance, ASW chief of marketing could have regular meetings with Emily Samore, senior director of communications. This could give ASW members in their respected positions hands-on experience from a professional in that field.

“With the knowledge that I have, I want to help ASW thrive, clubs thrive, and students thrive,” said Hailey Kim, newly appointed VP of campus affairs.
