Westminster College students gathered in the Shaw Student Center for the spring semester Late Night Breakfast on Wednesday. Late Night Breakfast is one of many activities put on by the Student Affairs teams as part of Stress Less Week which occurs every semester during finals.
Stress Less Week is made up of specific day activities and treats for the student body during the last two weeks of each semester. Other popular Stress Less Week activities include massages, yoga classes, coloring and an array of free food. Each of these events and activities are free to students to help them stay stress-free as they end their semester.
Late Night Breakfast is the kickstarter to Stress Less Week and took place at 11p.m. yesterday night. Staff and faculty served Bon Appetit’s full breakfast service to students who gathered in the student center to mingle and relieve stress from their finals.
“Late Night Breakfast has been happening for probably 30 plus years,” said Karnell Black, dean of students and recently appointed vice president of Student Affairs. “It’s a tradition.”
This event is student-focused, but is also an opportunity for faculty and staff to see their students in a different light, Black said.
Holly Sperry, an administration assistant for Institutional Advancement, said she has participated in Late Night Breakfasts eight times. She said her favorite part is seeing the students enjoying the event since she doesn’t get to interact with students very often.
“They seem to have fun, [it] takes a little pressure off,” Sperry said. “They’re very polite, they’re very happy, they always say thank you and you can joke around with them. I think it’s a nice distraction from testing.”
First-year student Chris Ooley said his favorite part about Late Night Breakfast is seeing the line of his peers at an event where everyone gets the chance to mingle and relax.
“It’s a really good initiative,” Ooley said. “If we use our [student funds] for anything, it should be for less stress during finals week.”
